I call all my kids 'rats', cause that's what they are! Somewhere along the way, the name just stuck. I'm going to be almost dead living in a nursing home and still call you 'my rats'!
I think it also came from Rug Rats, a loving term or nickname for kids. Maybe it is short for brats. Like without the b. Whatever it is, it isn't going away.
